Introduction to the Kit (long)
The Learning Resource Kit is an free interactive online tool, which offers secondary schools practical support in choosing, managing and evaluating learning resources.
It has been designed by a partnership of educational organisations and associations to help schools to get the most from their investment in resources, and to help them choose and use the most appropriate resources for their needs.
Applicable at both whole-school and departmental level, schools can use the Kit’s self-evaluation features to inform school improvement planning, or borrow from the tips and ideas to make a practical difference to the value they get from their resources.
Learning Resource Kit companies
The Learning Resource Kit was developed by a partnership of educational organisations, who together agreed to create a tool that could support schools in the effective management of learning resources.
The Educational Publishers Council, which represents the publishers of learning resources for schools and colleges, led the partnership with input, support and endorsement from: British Educational Suppliers Association (BESA), NAACE (the association for advisors in ICT), the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT), Secondary Heads Association (SHA), the Specialist Schools Trust and the Subject Associations Working Group. The Kit also has the endorsement of DfES.
Learning Resource Kit people
The Kit was managed and funded by the Educational Publishers Council, the schools division of The Publishers Association (www.publishers.org.uk). EPC’s Director is Graham Taylor (gtaylor@publishers.org.uk / 0207 691 1377) and EPC’s Manager is Katherine Alexander (kalexander@publishers.org.uk / 0207 691 1379), who should be contacted with Kit queries in the first instance.
The Kit was written by John Evans, an educational consultant and until recently, a secondary Head (johnevans@f2s.com) . He was supported by John Riley, Deputy Head of the Abbey School, Faversham and David Mitchell of the Geographical Association and the Institute of Education.
The website was developed by Schoolzone (www.schoolzone.co.uk).
Learning Resource Kit quotes
Excellent – focus for S4 self evaluation, department improvement plans, development funding bids, evaluation on current resource management practice, evaluation of new resources. It gives us a template to work with and some clear targets and suggestions on how to improve. Kevin Lewis, Head of Science, Chosen Hill School
The concept of the LRT enables a common language to take shape. It gives senior managers a conceptual framework to justify investment and most importantly track benefits. Ralph Reid, Head of ICT, Halliford School
Excellent for departments to use as a team. Raises lots of questions that need asking and I can see a department using them ‘off the shelf’ without any need for tinkering. Stephen Saville, Head of PSE/RS, Archway School
The tool should give me clear evidence of self-evaluation for Ofsted. I see this as one of the main motivations for use as it shows a clear process has been followed. Christine Arthington, Team Leader Design and Technology, High Tunstall School
